NFPA Certified Fire Inspector II (CFI 2) Certification

The role of a fire inspector is critical in safeguarding lives and property, but the complexities of modern, multi-occupancy structures demand an advanced level of expertise. The NFPA Certified Fire Inspector II (CFI-2) designation is the definitive mark of a senior professional, validating your ability to perform complex, in-depth inspections and code enforcement duties. This advanced certification is aligned directly with the rigorous job performance requirements outlined in NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner, specifically Chapter 5.

What Is the CFI-II Certification?

The Certified Fire Inspector II (CFI-II) is an advanced level fire inspection credential issued by NFPA. It builds upon the foundational competencies of Fire Inspector I and aligns with Chapter 5 of NFPA 1031: Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plans Examiner.

Where Fire Inspector I focuses on basic inspection and plan review tasks, CFI-II expands your skillset to more complex systems, broader code application, and comprehensive inspections including specialized fire protection systems.

  • Industry-recognized rigorous practicum providing the opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their ability to perform inspections
  • Commonly cited as a job requirement by employers for fire service and building departments
  • Differentiator in the marketplace for insurance professionals, building contractors, facility managers, and others
  • Fair and uniform process for certification that’s accessible to all
  • Certification holders also receive a CFI-II certificate that further highlights their accomplishment
  • Anyone applying for CFI-II must have the CFI-I certification from NFPA or another nationally accredited organization

Who Should Attend?

This training is ideal for fire inspectors, fire safety officers, code enforcement personnel, and consultants who already have the Fire Inspector I credential and wish to advance. It’s suited for those tasked with inspecting complex or large systems, managing fire code compliance, or preparing for leadership roles in fire prevention departments.

Why Pursue CFI-II?

Achieving the CFI-II certification demonstrates that you’re competent in advanced fire inspection responsibilities. It’s a mark of credibility among employers, AHJs, and clients. Because the exam is open-book and tests practical code interpretation, it shows you are ready to apply NFPA standards, not just memorize them.

Additionally, as the fire safety field grows more complex, having the CFI-II credential helps you stay relevant, qualify for advanced roles, and improve credibility in audits, job opportunities, or regulatory reviews.

The CFI-II certification can help professionals who are responsible for performing fire inspections and/or need to prove that they meet the job performance requirements defined in NFPA 1031, including:

  • Building code officials
  • CMS inspectors
  • Facility managers
  • Fire service members
