What Is a HAZOP Study?
HAZOP — Hazard and Operability study — is a systematic technique for identifying potential deviations from a process’s design intent and the hazards those deviations could create. A facilitator leads a multidisciplinary team through a piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) node by node, applying guide words such as “No,” “More,” “Less,” “Reverse,” and “Other Than” to process parameters like flow, pressure, and temperature, documenting causes, consequences, existing safeguards, and recommendations for each credible deviation.

Basic familiarity helps, but the course includes P&ID orientation as part of the practical sessions for participants who haven’t worked with them extensively before.
